The Extraordinary World of Music: A Story of Mysteries and Miracles, told in five songs

ABSTRACT: The AARP has created The Music and Memory Project to better document the impact of music on well-being after age 50. Through the power of songs, this article documents studies done by Concetta Tomaino, who worked with Oliver Sacks. The AARP has created compelling stories and videos, as well as online events as part of this program. To find articles other than this one, which examines issues of memory, isolation, and restoring a sense of self, check out the Brain Health & Wellness Center at aarp.org/brainhealth and also go to aarp.org/musicandmemory to see videos and more articles. The article also discusses technological innovation in using fMRI to see which parts of the brain are stimulated by listening to music, thus triggering memories of well-loved songs and memories while listening to those songs, thought to be lost. It summarizes some of the work done by Michael Thaut, a professor of music and neuroscience in Toronto. He started doing experiments with fMRI in 2018, testing songs patients knew from years ago.
