25 Aug How Music Primes the Brain for Learning
ABSTRACT: This article covers several books recently written about the cognitive benefits of music, as well as specific educational and SEL benefits. Two books were cited: Of Sound Mind by neuroscientist, Nina Kraus, which links the brain’s functions directly to hearing and processing sounds like music, and Anita Collins’ book, The Music Advantage, which shows how ““music and reading may well be complementary learning activities,” with music functioning as a robust tool to improve language learning.” The article covers the social side of music too and how singing together provides another benefit for students as they interact in a group. They also mention several non-profits with researchg to show how community agencies involved with music education have made inroads with underserved communities.
