The Power of Music: Enhancing Muscle Strength in Older People

ABSTRACT: Sarcopenia, gradual loss of muscle mass, strength and function, is a common problem in aging and can impact physical performance. Research suggests that listening to your favorite music may enhance muscle strength in older individuals. In a crossover study, participants aged 65+ performed handgrip strength tests while listening to favorite music, least favorite music, or no music. Listening to favorite music increased handgrip strength by +0.87 kgf compared to no music and +0.97 kgf compared to least favorite music. This finding has implications for grip strength measurements and suggests using favorite music as a fun stimulus in rehabilitation and workouts for seniors. Further exploration is needed in diverse older populations.
