12 Sep Effectiveness of Medical Music Therapy Practice: Integrative Research Using the Electronic Health Record: Rationale, Design, and Population Characteristics
ABSTRACT: This is a study showing how music therapy was integrated across an entire health system vs. in one unit of one hospital, which is quite interesting. It uses data about these therapy sessions from the electronic health records (EHRs) of hospital patients over a span of 3.5 years. While interesting in its scope and setup, the study did not come to any specific conclusions about music therapy’s effect on a wide range of patients. It does show the most common reasons why physicians, nurses, and other members of an inpatient care team referred patients to music therapy. It does recommend further study in areas like music therapy’s impact on length of stay, patient reported outcomes, cost of care, etc. The study was funded by the Kulas Foundation.
